Dry fire practice is the single most effective way to improve your shooting skills without spending money on ammunition. It is also safe — if you follow the rules. Rule 1: No ammunition in the room. Remove all live ammunition from the practice area. This includes magazines, loose rounds, and speed loaders. Rule 2: Verify the firearm is unloaded. Check the chamber, the magazine well, and the bore visually and physically. Do this every single time you pick up the firearm. Rule 3: Choose a safe backstop. Practice pointing at a wall that would stop a bullet if a mistake occurred. Never point at a window, door, or interior wall facing an occupied room. Rule 4: No distractions. Turn off the TV. Put your phone in another room. Focus completely on the practice session. Rule 5: End with a ritual. When you finish, say aloud: The session is over. I am now reloading for live fire. This mental break prevents the dangerous habit of mixing dry and live practice. Follow these rules without exception. Every negligent discharge during dry fire began with a skipped step.
