Recommended gear for new firearm owners — quality storage options, cleaning supplies, safety devices, and first training accessories at every budget level.

Safe Storage (Required First Purchase)

Quick-access biometric or keypad pistol safe ($80–$200) — for the bedside firearm.
Full-size gun safe ($300–$800) — for additional firearms and ammunition.
Lock your safe to a wall stud or floor anchor — prevents theft of the entire safe.
Never use a trigger lock as the primary safety method with children in the home.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Bore snake (caliber-specific) — fastest way to run a patch after a range session.
Cleaning solvent (Hoppes No. 9 or similar) and gun oil (CLP or dedicated lubricant).
Cleaning patches, a brass rod, and bronze bore brush for your caliber.
Microfiber cloths for wiping down the exterior.
Clean after every range session — minimum every 500 rounds.

Safety Devices

Cable lock (often included with new firearm purchase) — use during transport.
Trigger lock — secondary storage option if no safe is available.
Snap caps (dummy rounds) for dry-fire practice without damaging the firing pin.

First Training Accessories

Electronic earmuffs ($40–$120) — hear range commands while protecting your hearing.
Shooting glasses (ANSI Z87.1) — ballistic-rated, not standard sunglasses.
Quality holster for your firearm model (kydex OWB recommended for beginners).
Spare magazines (2–3 minimum) — extend practice time without constant reloading.
Shot timer or timer app — even dry-fire improves with time accountability.
