Home Defense Planning Guide

A step-by-step worksheet for building your household's layered defense plan — covering entry points, communication plans, safe rooms, and firearm readiness.

Map Your Entry Points

Walk each exterior door and window — note which can be quickly secured and which are vulnerable.
Install quality deadbolts (grade 1 or 2) on all exterior doors.
Sliding doors: add a bar or pin to prevent forced opening.
Consider door-frame reinforcement kits for kick-in resistance.
Garage door: verify automatic reversal and the emergency release is not easily accessible from outside.

Establish a Safe Room

Choose a room with a solid-core door and a lock (typically the master bedroom).
Ensure a charged phone is accessible from this room at all times.
Know the address you will give to 911 — practice saying it aloud.
Position yourself with a clear line of sight to the door and a hard backstop behind you.
Accessible storage of your defensive firearm in this room (quick-access safe recommended).

Household Communication Plan

Designate a verbal codeword that signals all household members to go to the safe room.
Practice the route to the safe room with every household member, including children.
Assign a caller — who calls 911 while others secure the safe room.
Agree in advance: no one exits the safe room to investigate. Call police.
Post the plan in a discreet but accessible location for household review.

Firearm Readiness Checklist

Defensive firearm is loaded and in a rapid-access secure location.
You have practiced drawing and presenting under stress (dry-fire or range).
All adults authorized to access the firearm know the safe combination or access method.
Children are not able to access the firearm unsupervised.
You have a weapon-mounted or nearby light for low-light situations.

Review this plan with your household every 6 months. Update it when home layout or household members change.
